The first time I heard Panhandle Hook I was fifteen years old and it’s been one of my favorite melodies ever since. I have always considered it a difficult tune, though it becomes easier to play as I’ve gotten older and less concerned with making changes. Developing the melody is more important and that makes things much simpler. The original recording of this piece is from Ernie Krivda’s “Tough Tenor Red Hot,” from 1985. That album also features Jeff Halsey, one of my early mentors.
