about

When the Blue LLama Jazz Club opened in Ann Arbor in late 2018, I knew I wanted to make a live recording there. The owners had spared no expense in designing the room to be perfect for live music, and they had a state of the art sound system. So every time the Anest, Kendrick, & McKinney organ group would show up to play, I made sure we recorded those sets.
I’ve long wanted to put an organ trio together, but it wasn’t until 2019 that I finally got around to it. I think that having played with Gayelynn in a few other projects, I had a sense that she would be an excellent drummer to work with in this setting. Her time feel is flawless, she has incredible energy at all dynamic levels, and she always keeps the vibe joyful. I love her solos and the way she hears everything that’s happening in the band. She also had a few suggestions for organ players. Corey turned out to be a fantastic choice. He has a great groove, huge ears, and he is a master improviser. Playing with him is always a blast, and he also took time to get together before gigs and rehearse a bit. That allowed us to pick some tunes that would not normally be heard these days, such as “Nomad” and “Panhandle Hook”, both of which appear on this set. I hope you enjoy listening to this music as much as we enjoyed creating it!
